DENGUE MACULOPATHY

Female, 29 years old, complains of decrease in visual acuity in both eyes, beginning three days ago. The visual symptom was preceded seven days by fever (39.1ºC), headache, myalgia and diarrhea. Eye exam: best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 in right eye (RE) and counting finger in left eye (LE); slit-lamp exam was normal in both eyes; intraocular pressure was 15mmHg in RE and 13mmHg in LE. Fundoscopy and fluorescein angiogram were normal with no leakage on both eyes. The OCT showed subretinal fluid, central shift in the retinal pigmentation in the right and left eyes; intraretinal cysts are more pronounced in the LE. Laboratory tests were also requested, and showed positive dengue IgM serology. The patient was hospitalized, and treatment with a short course of intravenous methylprednisolone of 250 mg/day was initiated. Six months after the onset of the condition, visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes, and the OCT showed no edema.
