RETROBULBAR VARICE: DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS AND OUTCOMES AFTER TREATMENT
Introdução / Purpose
The purpose of this study was to describe the diagnosis of retro-bulbar varice by ultrasonography in association with Magnetic resonance imaging and the reduction of its volume after oral treatment with propanolol.
Material e Método / Methods
Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of the orbital region was performed to identify the location of the lesion that was causing the proptosis and to raise diagnostic hypothesis. Ocular ultrasonography was performed for morphological evaluation of the lesion.
Resultados / Results
MRI showed a retroviral bulbar vascular alteration, suggestive of capillary hemangioma. After performing an ultrasonography, we could verify that the lesion corresponded to a retrobulbar Varice. Treatment with 20 milligrams of propranolol was started. After 8 weeks of treatment a new evaluation was performed and the MRI evidenced a reduction of the lesion volume. After observing the improvement of the lesion we opted to continue the current treatment and to keep observing the evolution after the maintenance therapy.
Discussão e Conclusões / Conclusion
We highlight the importance of requesting ocular ultrasonography for patients with uncertain diagnoses, as this may change the treatment approach.
