Abstract General Information
Título / Title
RETINAL INJURIES ASSOCIATED WITH LASER SHOW EXPOSURE
Introdução / Purpose
Report of retinal injuries from hand-held lasers raised awareness of the hazards of recreational lasers. However, there are few reports of retinal injuries associated with laser show exposure, which is usually considered relatively safe.
Material e Método / Methods
Case report of retinal injurie after exposure to laser show, that was manufactured of the 4 W-powered 635nm red, 2 W-powered 520nm green and 4W-powered 447nm blue = white mixed 10 W-powered diode laser.
Resultados / Results
A 25-year-old healthy male presented with paracentral scotoma in the right eye that developed several hours after visiting a indoor party with laser show. On examination, his best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Anterior segment and intraocular pressure were normal. Retinal examination revealed an annular hypochromic lesion, temporal superior to the fovea, in the right eye. Optical Coherence Tomography showed focal interruption of the Ellipsoid Zone in the foveal in right eye. Visual Field Test was normal. Patient was followed with no interventions.
Discussão e Conclusões / Conclusion
Retinal injuries by accidental laser exposure depends on the power of the laser, wavelength, exposure time and various individual factors. The importance of this case is that this mixed diode laser used in this laser show was graded as a class 4 device by the International Electrotechnical Commission 60825-1 standard, which should only be operated by personnel adequately trained in their use and approved by the laser safety officer. They may cause skin and eye injuries and their use requires extreme caution. However, lasers have come into widespread use with no supervision or marketing legislation. In summary, it is importante of strictly regulating the production, operation and commercialization of laser devices for laser shows to prevent eye damage.
